Established in 1978, in Savannah, Georgia, Marilyn’s Art Glass was a brother-sister venture. Marilyn Swift moved back to her hometown, Houghton, Michigan in 1991. Today her brother, Mark Mackey, has a large beveled glass studio on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, and they remain in contact on larger projects. In 1991, Marilyn reestablished the business on a 10-acre hobby farm located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in the Houghton – Hancock area, also known as the Copper Country. The name was changed to Marilyn’s Stained Glass. Fifteen years and two additions later, Marilyn’s Stained Glass has grown from a three-car garage to a 2000 square foot studio, teaching facility, retail supply store, gallery and an apartment to accommodate students from out of town for our Vacation workshops and Glass Camps.
The original studio (the garage) now holds all the supplies that a glass crafter could ever need. The retail supply store has everything from a flux brush to a ring saw, and has over 10,000 sq. ft of glass, a large selection of beveled glass clusters, books, patterns, solder, and anything else a glass crafter might need. The first addition to the original studio is the teaching facility and gallery. The teaching facility may accommodate up to 8 students, but we allow only 6 students at a time for most of the classes. We also have an additional area called the "mud room" for stepping stone and mosaic work. The latest addition is the artist’s area with a 4’ x 6’ light box table, a kitchen, a bathroom and 2 large working tables (where large and small commission work can be seen in progress.) The addition also has a full basement that houses woodworking, beveling, shipping and an area for kilns (for fusing glass and bead making and a shipping area.) How about taking a stained glass sabbatical? Above the shop is a self-contained apartment set-up to rent those who might want to take stained glass class, as a part of their vacation. This allows the vacationer to spend the afternoons and evenings exploring the Copper Country. (See Vacation Workshops under the Classes category) Marilyn’s Stained Glass also displays and sells glass works at two other locations, Swift Hardware in Downtown Houghton and The Community Arts Center in Downtown Hancock. Marilyn’s works can be seen throughout the area in many churches, commercial buildings, and private homes. The staff at Marilyn’s Stained Glass is big enough to handle any job, but small enough to add that special touch. Whether you want to craft it yourself or have a professional create your decorative vision we can serve you. Marilyn’s Studio/Gallery is a "must see" for the crafter, glass student, or the curious.
